Forget ethics: #RealDonaldTrump needs to take bribes or face insolvency

Right now there is going a tough discussion on how Donald Trump should separate from his businesses to prevent „conflicts of interest“. I’m not sure if this is going to be the main issue.

Most of Donalds businesses rely on his brand and are mostly focussed on affluent customers. But even in the group of rich people (earning more than $100,000) only 47% voted for him – 53% opposed him! And with his way to deal with this 53%, their opposition to Donald is not going to vanish.

Take me – Five years ago he was just a well known strange guy. I used to stay in his hotels. Now – under no circumstances I would stay in a hotel using the brand „Trump“. And it’s irrelevant if he really has any interest in this business or just franchised his brand. No way! And it looks like that other people, who oppose him, do the same. Already in May 2016 (and he was still only a strange guy running for president) bookings for Trump hotels went down around 60% for „his“ hotels. And just after the election – was the same.

We are talking here about very competitive environments. A long time loss of just a couple of percent of revenue can turn any of his businesses into losses. With no short hope for change. All his businesses are highly leverage. If his businesses doesn’t meet the covenants (a certain level of profitability) in their loan contracts, it’s a fast lane to insolvency.

Yes, banks will hesitate to pull the plug of a Trump business. But all? Over time he is going to accumulate more and more banks, where his businesses are failing the convenants. And with more and more banks with the ability to pull the trigger … they all are going to get nervous looking on each other who will be the first. They will not trust each other to hold still. One will pull the trigger. And then it’s going to be fast! There is no rescue option for a damage brand. Only fire sell the businesses and rebrand them. Finito.

So what option does Donald has to not be the first Potus to get insolvent during his presidency?

  • Win back your (US) customers (would mean to act as a president for all Americans – forget it!)
  • Win back your international clients (would mean to act like a leader of the free world – no  chance!)
  • Stretch your brand to non affluent customers (the so called „middle class“ below $100,000 income – well – though competition as well and you’re going to loss your original clients fully – even the one who voted for you – not a good idea!)
  • Compensate your failing businesses with new profit generation legal businesses (will be difficult under the eyes of the angry public)
  • Compensate your failing businesses with other „revenue“ (for instance sell it for a good price in favour for a public service)

Any other options for Donald? I’m a creative businessman … but I have no other ideas.

Well, the good news with the „transfer of power“ to his sons – he may blame them for failing 😉
